Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in September and October, 2021

Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes a $50,000 grant for organizations that use arts and culture based practices to aid projects that intersect climate and racial justice work, an Alaska residency for women writers, and a $20,000 fellowship for artists to support craft practices.

Lower East Side Printshop Keyhold Residency
New York, New York
Deadline: September 1, 2021

Lower East Side Printshop offers emerging artists free year-long studio residencies to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. Printmaking facilities are available for intaglio, relief, monotype, waterbased screenprinting, and other techniques that employ the tools at hand. Residents receive a $1,000 stipend, free career development workshops and salons, and more.

San Francisco, California

The Alliance for California Traditional Arts offers grants between $1,500 and $15,000 for San Francisco-based individuals and organizations.

Kimmel Harding Nelson Residency
Nebraska City, Nebraska
Deadline: September 1, 2021

This residency is open to emerging visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists from across the country and around the world. Residencies are available for 2 to 8 weeks stays. Each resident receives a $100 stipend per week, free housing, and a private studio. There is a $35 application fee.

Surel’s Place Residency Program
Garden City, Idaho
Deadline: September 1, 2021

This residency is open to professional visual, literary, and performance artists age 25 and over. Residents are expected to interact with the public through one workshop and one final event. The program provides housing, modest living and travel stipends, use of a bicycle for transport, and free or discounted tickets to art events and movies.

Ucross Residency Program
Clearmont, Wyoming
Deadline: September 1, 2021

This residency is open to visual artists, writers, composers, choreographers, interdisciplinary artists, and performance artists, as well as collaborative teams. Artists will be provided with living accommodations, meals, work space. There is a $40 application fee, and the fee is waived for Native American artists applying for the Visual Arts or Writing fellowship program.

In partnership with actor and activist Riz Ahmed and Left Handed Films, Pillars created the Pillars Artist Fellowship program to empower emerging Muslim writers and directors on their pathways to success. CPR – Center for Performance Research 2022 Artist Residency
Brooklyn, New York
Deadline: September 7, 2021

This year-long residency seeks to support a wide range of artists, from emerging to established, working within various perspectives of contemporary dance and performance, and time-based forms. Residents receive 150 subsidized rehearsal hours in the facility studios, curatorial support, access to equipment and production resources, a $1,000 stipend, and more.

This program provides $5,000 grants to support 16 dance projects taking place in Upper Manhattan from January 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023. Individual dance artists, ensembles, collectives, and nonprofit organizations with budgets of $250,000 or below are welcome to apply.

Hester Street Radical Imagination for Racial Justice Grant
New York, New York or Puerto Rico

Hester Street’s grant worth $50,000 supports organizations that use arts and culture based practices to aid projects that intersect climate and racial justice work. Applicants must work in New York City or Puerto Rico and be a 501(c)3, or have fiscal sponsorship by a nonprofit organization.

Ox-Bow Haunted House Residency
Saugatuck, Michigan

Artists working in all media and disciplines, including sound, video, puppetry, practical effects and special effects, are welcome to apply for this mini-residency in preparation for “Ox-Bow Goes to Hell 2021.” Artists will be provided a fee of $500, a $300 budget for materials, and receive room and board.

Princeton Arts Fellowship
Princeton, New Jersey

This fellowship is awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. Applicants should be early career composers, conductors, musicians, choreographers, visual artists, filmmakers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors, or performance artists. Fellows receive an $86,000 a year stipend and spend two consecutive academic years at Princeton University— formal teaching is expected.

Hambidge Center Residency

This residency is open to all kinds of creative practioners including visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians, ceramicists, and arts and cultural administrators. Located in the north Georgia mountains, each resident has a private studio and living space, with meals provided four nights a week. $30 application fee.

Experimental Weaving Residency
Boulder, Colorado
Deadline: September 15, 2021

The Unstable Design Lab is hosting its second experimental weaving residency with the goal of developing new techniques and open-source resources that can co-evolve fiber arts and engineering practice. The resident will work with the lab in Boulder, access to tools, free housing, airfare, meals, and a $9,520 stipend.

Bloedel Reserve Creative Residency
Bainbridge Island, Washington

Open to professional and emerging artists, composers, writers, botanists, landscape architects, researchers, and others with work relating to nature, this residency program on the Bloedel grounds provides unlimited access to the Reserve’s 150 acres of sculpted gardens, forests, meadows, and wildlife habitats. There is a $25 application fee.

Abbott Watts Residency for Photography

The residency is open to artists whose photographic work leans to the experimental and/or who have a need to produce exhibitable work. The residents will be provided housing with access to a darkroom and a private digital studio, and a $500-1000 stipend. There is an application fee of $25.

Diversity Development Fund gives producers of color up to $25,000 in research and development funding so they can develop documentaries for public media. The documentary can be on any subject, viewpoint or style as long as it is in development or pre-production.

The Pioneer Works Music Residency provides musicians and sound artists with the exclusive use of a professional recording studio. Residents work independently or with the support of an in-house audio engineer to create and record new work free from commercial constraints over the course of a month.

This program commissions emerging writers to pursue the underlying themes and ideas that inform individual Recess’ Session projects, initiating meaningful exchanges between artists and writers, and facilitating the mutual production of new work. Wendy’s Subway seeks submissions of innovative, hybrid, and cross-genre work that charts new possibilities and expressions of poetic form. The winner will author a publication, receive an honorarium of $1,000, a standard royalty contract, and 25 author copies. There is a $20 application fee.
