Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Open Calls

Curator-in-Residence Open Call:
Open to national and international curators, the chosen candidate will participate in an 18-month fully subsidized live/work residency as part of Bemis Center’s acclaimed Residency Program. They will originate and present one exhibition and related public programs inclusive of local, national, and international artists. Competitive applicants will possess a strong knowledge of national and international contemporary art and a genuine interest in researching and responding to cultural production in Omaha and the surrounding region. Fee: $40.

Artist-in-Residence Open Call:
Located in the historic Old Market, Bemis Center’s 110,000 square foot facility accommodates a broad range of artistic activity. Selected artists-in-residence enjoy generous sized, private live/work studios complete with kitchen and bathroom, a $1,250 USD monthly stipend and $750 travel stipend. Due to the limitations of B2 visas (touring/visiting), international artists-in-residence are eligible to receive reimbursement of qualified expenses, such as airfare, ground transportation, and meals. Selected artists are responsible for organizing travel to Omaha to attend the residency. Fee: $40.

Peters Valley School of Craft
Deadline: August 1, 2023

This residency is seeking artists who work in blacksmithing, ceramics, fibers, fine metals, wood, drawing/painting/collage or printmaking, and is open to all artists from emerging to professional. Selected artists will spend either two weeks or one month immersing themselves in time dedicated to their craft. A private room in a fully-furnished shared house and unlimited access to a fully-equipped studio (all utilities included) will be provided at no cost to the artist.

South Arts – Southern Prize and State Fellowships for Literary Arts
Deadline: August 4, 2023

Awards ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 are available for literary artists and writers working in fiction who live in the South Arts region: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

SculptureCenter In Practice 2024 Open Call
Deadline: August 6, 2023

In Practice 2024 invites artists who have not yet had an institutional solo exhibition in New York City to submit proposals for solo exhibitions in designated gallery spaces at SculptureCenter. Artists are also invited to propose off-site projects, publishing initiatives, performances, and nontraditional formats, which will be considered based on feasibility. Up to seven artists will be selected to participate in the program from spring 2024 to winter 2025.

First Peoples Fund Fellowships

These fellowships are open to visual, performing, and literary artists with cash awards of $10,000. Applicants must be an enrolled member or provide proof of lineal descendancy of a U.S. federally recognized tribe, a state recognized tribe, or be an Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian.

Artists in Business Leadership Fellowships
Deadline: August 7, 2023
This fellowship provides working capital funds and professional development resources for artists interested in strengthening their art business and establishing themselves as independent artists.

Cultural Capital Fellowships

This fellowship provides grant funding for artists whose practice is centered on cultural heritage and community.

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation’s Sight/Geist Performance Art Open Call
Deadline: August 8, 2023

Open to emerging New York City-based individual artists, duos, or collectives focused on performance art, selected artists will receive $1,000 for their program ($750 for performance, $250 for discussion), inclusive of any material expenses. The Foundation is looking for work that addresses their mission of art and social justice through the medium of performance.

Emerging Artist & Writers Residency
This Residency provides stipends, multiple resident gatherings, visiting artists & curators, and an open studio/public reading, and is aimed at writers, visual, and interdisciplinary artists in the Pacific Northwest who are towards the beginning of their creative paths and can benefit from the time to focus and receive support from a community of peers and specialists in their fields.

In the Making Residencies
These residencies have public-facing components that could be a workshop, a temporary installation, a performance, or another type of community engagement at some point during the residency. Stipends and funds for these vary and are project-specific, and occur throughout the year.

Oolite Arts Studio Residency + Knight Housing Stipend
Deadline: August 16, 2023

This residency provides free studio space in Miami Beach, access to digital media equipment, and exhibitions/financial support. Starting in 2024, Studio Residents who have lived in Miami-Dade County for at least two years will also receive the Knight Artist Housing Stipend, a $12,000-a-year stipend to ease the impact of the region’s affordability crisis.

Open Call: 2024 Artist-in-Residence Program at CPR
Deadline: August 16, 2023

CPR – Center for Performance Research’s year-long Artist-in-Residence Program seeks to support New York City-based artists working within various perspectives of contemporary dance, performance, and time-based forms. The residency creates an open environment for experimentation, exploration, embodiment, and exchange, providing ten artists each year with research and presentation opportunities, rehearsal space, curatorial and project support, and peer dialogue.

The Laundromat Project 2024 Create Change Open Call
Deadline: August 18, 2023

Create Change programs are for artists and cultural producers who are interested in developing and deepening a collaborative, community-based, and socially-engaged creative practice.

Fellowship
This fellowship is a six-month incubator that gives participants the tools to develop, workshop, and generate project ideas incorporating The LP’s values and community-based methodology.

Residency
This residency supports the development of participatory and community-attuned creative projects by artists of color working within their communities. Projects may take place anywhere in the five boroughs of NYC, either in person or virtually.

Bed-Stuy Residency
This residency supports the development of participatory and community-attuned creative projects by artists of color who live, work, or are otherwise invested in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

The Nest Heritage Craft Prize 
Deadline: August 21, 2023

Open to applicants located in Texas, this award provides winners with a grant of $25,000 and 4 semi-finalists with a cash prize of $2,500 each. Applicants should represent heritage craft found across Texas which includes, but is not limited to: pottery, enamelwork, quilting, woodworking, leather smithing (boots, belts), basketry, lamp working and glassblowing, silver work, embroidery, textile creations, and visual arts.

Malta Biennale Open Call
Deadline: August 25, 2023

This call is open to both local Maltese and international artists, curators, curatorial teams, and project managers wishing to present projects in accordance with the theme of this year’s Malta Biennale, “white sea olive groves.” Artists can apply from any stage of their career (emerging or established) and from any nation.Accepted artistic media include all forms of visual art: installation, paintings, sculptures, photography and video art. Maximum grants provided by the call are €13,000.

The Milkweed Learning Hub & Chrysalis Micro-Residency

This fully-funded hybrid opportunity is offered by the Chrysalis Institute, whose mission is to nourish the creative trajectory of emerging BI&POC artists. The Milkweed Learning hub is a virtual space where artists explore the intersection of identity and the creative process. Artists will also be welcomed to a 67-acre natural space in Southwest Michigan.

L+A+N+D: An Experience of Discovery – Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest

Just outside of Louisville, KY, Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest’s new initiative L+A+N+D (Landscape + Art + Nature + Design) annually celebrates innovative design concepts for immersive outdoor installations. Designed and constructed by artists, architects, landscape architects, designers, and creatives, L+A+N+D will provide creative outdoor experiences with topics addressing humans’ connection to nature, beauty in the landscape, biodiversity, conservation, sustainability, and climate change. The selected experiences are implemented via a stipend to the applicant(s), and a construction budget for fabrication and installation expenses.

500 Capp Street Artist Residency Open Call

Open to international, national and local artists, this five-month residency program at 500 Capp Street in San Francisco, CA will focus on highlighting experimentation that expands the boundaries of genre, medium and material. Artists will have three months for research and an additional two months for the final project.

Storyknife Writers Retreat: 2024 Residency Applications
Deadline: August 31, 2023

Storyknife provides women with the time and space to explore their craft without distraction. Residencies at Storyknife in Homer, Alaska, are either for two or four weeks, with food and lodging covered during the period of their residency. Travel to and from Homer, Alaska, is the responsibility of the resident. Applicants must be woman-identified, 21 years or older, and applying as an individual artist. Fee: $40.

Willapa Bay AiR: 2024 Residencies
Deadline: August 31, 2023

Situated on 20 acres in coastal southwest Washington state, Willapa Bay AiR offers month-long, self-directed residencies to emerging and established artists, filmmakers, writers, playwrights, scholars, singer/songwriters, and musical composers. The Residency provides lodging, meals, and work space, at no cost, to six residents each month from April 1 through October 28 of the year. Fee: $30.

Bryn Du’s Artist in Residence Program
Deadline: August 31, 2023

The focus of this residency is to enhance local awareness and engagement in the arts by introducing new and varied artists to the Granville community throughout the calendar year. The residency is open nationwide for artists of all disciplines to apply including but not limited to those in the fields of visual arts, literature, music, theater, fashion, dance, storytelling and audiovisual studies. Stipends include $2000 for an 8 week residency and $3000 for a 12 week residency. Fee: $15.

Gulf Coast Magazine: Toni Beauchamp Prize in Critical Art Writing
Deadline: August 31, 2023 

This prize seeks to bring exposure to writers who are dealing with the spirit of the age and are unafraid to ask difficult questions in critical art writing. The winning essay will receive $3,000 dollars and publication in GC’s print journal. Two runners up will receive $1,000 each.

Polar STEAM Open Call: Antarctic Artists & Writers Program

This program facilitates deployments to the Antarctic for creative practitioners within the arts and humanities. Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts Residency

The Center awards up to seventy juried residencies per year to established and emerging visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists from across the country and the world. The Houston, TX edition of 8X5, a nationwide public art campaign named for the size of an average prison cell, is looking for up to ten Houston artists to submit artworks to be displayed on billboards, kiosks and digital trucks at important sites throughout the city. Princeton Arts Fellowship

This fellowship is awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching.
