Wu Tsang

Wu Tsang is a Los Angeles based artist, performer and filmmaker. Her projects have been presented at the Tate Modern (London), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Migros Museum (Zurich), the Whitney Museum and the New Museum (New York), the MCA Chicago, and MoCA Los Angeles. In 2012 she participated in the Whitney Biennial, Liverpool Biennial and Gwangju Biennial. Tsang’s first feature film, Wildness (2012), premiered at MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight (New York) and won the Grand Jury Prize for Outstanding Documentary at Outfest (Los Angeles), and her recent short film, You’re Dead to Me, premiered on PBS and won the 2014 Imagen Award for Best Short. She has received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Contemporary Art Foundation, the Center for Cultural Innovation, the Tiffany Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Frameline and Art Matters.

Artist BioA Day in the Life of Bliss is a multi-valence film project that combines science fiction, documentary, and performance art to explore how underground youth culture is evolving in the Internet age. Centering around an original story by Wu Tsang, the project takes multiple forms of video installation, performance, and a feature-length film. The story follows BLIS, a young performer who lives in a near-future world where digital avatars called LOOKS control humans through a panoptical social media platform (known as PRSM, pronounced “prism”). Produced in collaboration with many performers, DJ’s, hacktivists, and artists in different parts of the world, this project is both a document of real-life communities (which are increasingly virtual and transnational) and also a fictional staging of a resistance movement.
