Pablo Helguera

Pablo Helguera, a native of Mexico City, is a New York-based artist whose work spans from photography to drawing, performance to installation. His work has been extensively exhibited internationally and reviewed by The New York Times, Art in America, Artforum, Flash Art, Tema Celeste and Art Nexus, amongst others. Helguera has worked for over 15 years in U.S. museums and is the Director of Adult and Academic Programs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Previously, he was the head of public programs at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, co-director of the International Forum of Contemporary Art Experts in ARCO, Madrid and Director of the 5th Symposium of Contemporary Art Theory in Mexico City. He has been juror of biennial exhibitions in Guatemala, Costa Rica and the national contemporary art competition of San Juan. He has written four books: Endingness, Las Brujas de Tepoztlán, The Pablo Helguera Manual of Contemporary Art Style and a novel, The Boy Inside the Letter. He is represented by Enrique Guerrero Gallery in Mexico City. He received a BFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago.

Artist BioThe School of Panamerican Unrest is an artist-led, not-for-profit public art project that sought to generate connections between the different regions of the Americas through discussions, performances, screenings, and collaborations between organizations and individuals. Its main component was a nomadic forum or think-tank that traveled from Anchorage, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina, in Tierra del Fuego. It included a collapsible and movable “schoolhouse/museum” and a videotape library of images related to utopianism. Public workshops and lectures were conducted (and documented) at each stop. The work explores the history of utopian thought and political ideas of freedom throughout the Americas.
