Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in January and February 2022

Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes the Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants of up to $5,000 for professional dancers in need; the Right of Return USA Fellowship supporting formerly incarcerated artists in the creation of original works with an award of $20,000; and the Frankenthaler Climate Awards which provides $15,000 to selected artists and collectives with visual artworks that tackle the climate change emergency.

This fellowship is in support of gender-based, racial and economic justice is open to Women Artists of Color of any age, and will cover all workspace studio costs of 6 months each for 2 artists annually, along with a stipend of $1,000 and bespoke solo programming opportunities within the vibrant context of Gallery Aferro and Newark,

The Aperture Portfolio Prize is an annual international competition to discover, exhibit, and publish new talents in photography. The first prize winner will be published in Aperture magazine and will receive a $3,000 cash prize and exhibition in New York.

This program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 to professional dancers in need, who have a dire financial emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Skowhegan Artist Residency

Skowhegan offers artists the opportunity to engage fully with their studio practice, with their peers, and with distinguished faculty and mentors in it’s nine-week intensive &  residential program. Tuition is $6,000, and financial aid is available.

Visual artists, writers, and composers can apply for this residency, which provides full room and board, a meal or two provided by a local host, a $500 stipend, and quiet, natural surroundings to concentrate on creative work.

This fellowship program supports formerly incarcerated artists in the creation of original works. Six artists will be awarded a grant of $20,000 each to support a project aimed at reforming our criminal justice system.

Anderson Center Residency Program

Visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians, ceramicists, arts and cultural administrators, creative thinkers of all kinds can apply for this residency in the mountains of north Georgia. Each resident is given their own private studio which provides work and living space with a bathroom and full kitchen.

The Folger Institute Artist Research Fellowship

Painters, poets, sculptors, writers, playwrights, screenwriters, composers, photographers, and filmmakers of national and international origin can apply to stay in one of The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico’s eleven fully furnished artist casitas, or guest houses. Application fee: $25.

Circ Artist Grant

The Circ Artist Grant provides unrestricted funding to artists with a demonstrated commitment to their art. Two artists per grant cycle are awarded $500 each to enhance and further their creative practice. Emerging, mid-career, and professional artists are eligible to apply in an international open call, several times throughout the year. There is a $25 application fee.

Forge Project Open Call

Forge Project is offering a funded fellowship program for Indigenous artists, scholars, organizers, cultural workers, researchers, and educators. Each fellow will receive a total of $25,000 toward their practice and will have full access to the Forge Project site.

This fellowship opportunity offers emerging visual artists a seven month residency to focus solely on their work. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, housing and a work studio, exhibition opportunities, and a $1000 monthly stipend plus $1000 exit stipend to support relocation at the end of the Fellowship. The Hybrid Arts Lab is a program supporting trans, non-binary, and women artists working at the intersection of performance and technology. Locust Projects invites local, national, and international visual artists to apply for the opportunity to access the space and resources to create ambitious, large-scale new work. Governors Island Winter Ice Sculpture Show

OneBeat is accepting applications for OneBeat Virtual 2022, which will digitally convene approximately 35 musicians from 50 eligible countries and territories. This fully virtual residency program will take place from July 11th – September 6th 2022. Open to Musicians and sonic artists, ages 19-35, this virtual residency offers a unique opportunity for mentorship and collaborative exchange, a $1,500 USD honorarium, and a stipend for equipment.

Saltonstall x Circus Culture Juried Residency

The Saltonstall x Circus Culture residency is designed to provide a generous and spacious environment for the development of the circus arts. “Circus artist” is defined very broadly and includes designers, dramaturges, choreographers, directors, circademics, writers, photographers, riggers, performers, teaching artists, and more. This new initiative,, a partnership between Netflix and NewFest, supports emerging LGBTQ+ filmmakers. Four filmmakers with documentary, narrative, animated or episodic projects by and about the LGBTQ+ community will each receive a $25,000 grant.

Practitioner Fellows: Brown University Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America

Artists, media makers, and writers whose work focuses on race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States can apply to be a Practitioner Fellow for Brown University’s spring 2023 academic term. The Chautauqua School of Art residency program welcomes artists working in all disciplines who have yet to receive wide recognition of their work to apply for this residency. The curriculum intentionally breaks from the traditional methods of art education that silo disciplines from each other, and instead embraces a full range of studio and pragmatic studies including contemporary professional development. A central focus of the program is community building, which promises artists will leave with new friends, opportunities and resources well beyond their time at Chautauqua.

Armstrong Now Artist in Residence for 2022

This residency provides emerging artists with a platform to create new work inspired by the vast collection of artifacts and documents in the Armstrong Archives. Two residencies will be awarded to multidisciplinary artistic collaborations that draw upon Armstrong’s legacy, using the unique resources of his archives to inform new works that place Armstrong within a contemporary context. Selected artists will receive a one-time $10,000 award.

This residency program for emerging artists working in 2D, jewelry and metalsmithing, ceramics, and sculpture provides participants with a studio space, the opportunity to refine their teaching skills, and a generous monthly stipend. Residents are also paid for teaching and extracurricular events in the community. Candidates must have least a BFA and 25 hours experience teaching in a studio environment.
