Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in August and September, 2021

Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes an artist residency near Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, a $10,000 fellowship for visual artists based in Washington state, and an award for films exploring the intersection of health and climate change.

Art-in-Ed Workspace Residency
Rosendale, New York
Deadline: August 1, 2021

Women’s Studio Workshop offers artists the opportunity to teach with local school students intaglio, silkscreen, or hand papermaking. Residents have access to intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, darkroom photography, or ceramics studios to work on personal projects.

Leland, Michigan

Tusen Takk welcomes applications from both emerging and established visual artists working primarily in photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting, as well as creative writers and composers. Artists receive free housing, an honorarium of $625 a week, and more.

Hidden Turtle Residency
Akumal, Mexico

This residency based in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is open to artists and scientists. Residents receive private living and working space.

Betty Bowen Award
Deadline: August 1, 2021

This award is open to visual artists working in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. Administered by the Seattle Art Museum, the award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. The winner is receives $15,000 and will be able to show their work at the museum in the spring. Up to two Special Recognition Awards in the amount of $2,500 will also be granted. There is a $10 application fee.

Franconia Sculpture Park Residencies
Shafer, Minnesota
Deadline: August 1, 2021

Franconia provides a communal residency experience where up to nine selected artists live on-site at their farmhouse. Artists must be 21 years or older to apply.

Wave Hill Sunroom Project Space
Riverdale, New York
Deadline: August 1, 2021

The Sunroom Project Space is a venue for New York City-area emerging artists to develop a site-specific project as a solo exhibition at Wave Hill. Selected artists will receive an honorarium of $2,000, exhibition support, and professional development.

Teton Art Lab Artist Residency
Jackson, Wyoming
Deadline: August 2, 2021

Residence have access to studio spaces, and receive complimentary accommodations at The Anvil Hotel in downtown Jackson, $200 stipend per week, and $200 in dining credits the hotel’s onsite Italian restaurant. The residency asks each artist to offer an artist talk and/or demonstration that is open to the public.

Laundromat Project Create Change Fellowship
New York, New York
Deadline: August 8, 2021

New York City-based artists, activists, neighbors, designers, organizers, healers, storytellers, and cultural producers can apply for this fellowship to explore social practices through a community engagement lens. The program will consist of a series of hybrid virtual and in-person convenings to engage the Laundromat Project’s community-based art pedagogy and practices, which center collaborative, cooperative, and co-created art projects.

The Chicago Dancemakers Forum’s Lab Artists Program will grant up to six Chicago-based dancemakers with $20,000 along with a year of tailored support to aid in their research, development, and presentation of new dance work.

Creative Climate Film Awards

The Human Impacts Institute focuses this year’s film awards on the intersection between health and climate change. Film submissions can be shorts, feature length, PSAs, and documentaries. Winners can receive up to $1,000, and be a part of a series of New York screenings.

This fellowship supports visual artists based in Washington State with $5,000 to $10,000 awards.

The Fountainhead Residency, based in Miami, seeks visual artists who are at a pivotal point in their career. The residency is specific to foreign-born, US-based artists. Artists receive living and working space, travel, and a $1,000 stipend.

McColl Center Educators and Parents Artist-in-Residence Program
Charlotte, North Carolina

This residency is offered to educators and parents who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in McColl Center residencies because of responsibilities during school or university terms. Selected artists will receive a $6,000, a furnished apartment for the duration of the program, a private studio, and participation in a group exhibition. There is a $35 application fee.

National Parks Arts Foundation invites artists of all artistic media to apply for their residency program at Death Valley National Park. It comes with a $3,000 stipend, housing, amenities and food, and more.

This $15,000 grant is open to artists living in Baltimore City and Baltimore County working in literary, media, performing, or visual arts. The program is open to artists at any stage of their career and favors projects that have significant creative work left to accomplish.

Bemis Center Artist Residency
Omaha, Nebraska

This residency program is open to artists working in all disciplines. Selected artists will receive a private live/work space in Omaha’s arts and culture district, access to installation and production spaces, a space for large-scale sculpture fabrication, and a sound studio for rehearsing and recording, and a $1,000 monthly stipend. There is a $40 application fee.

Visual artists can apply to Joan Mitchell Center’s residency, based in New Orleans. Artists will receive a private studio, weekday meals, a $600 monthly stipend, and a range of professional development and public engagement opportunities.

The Toni Beauchamp Prize in Critical Art Writing seeks to address that there are significant lack of venues and support for young and mid-career writers working across the US by recognizing writers that are dealing with the spirit of the age and unafraid to ask difficult questions. There is a first place prize of $3,000 dollars, and two runners up will receive $1,000 each.

Lower East Side Printshop offers emerging artists free year-long studio residencies to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. CPR – Center for Performance Research 2022 Artist Residency

This year-long residency seeks to support a wide range of artists, from emerging to established, working within various perspectives of contemporary dance and performance, and time-based forms. Residents receive 150 subsidized rehearsal hours in the facility studios, curatorial support, access to equipment and production resources, a $1,000 stipend, and more.

This residency is open to all kinds of creative practioners including visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians, ceramicists, and arts and cultural administrators. Located in the north Georgia mountains, each resident has a private studio and living space, with meals provided four nights a week. $30 application fee.

The Pioneer Works Music Residency provides musicians and sound artists with the exclusive use of a professional recording studio. Residents work independently or with the support of an in-house audio engineer to create and record new work free from commercial constraints over the course of a month.
