Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in January and February, 2021

As we embark on a new year, with unforeseen challenges ahead, the livelihood for many artists still remains uncertain and unstable. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of artist opportunities for artists in all disciplines looking for time, space, and funding to make work in 2021.

The Studios at MASS MoCA
North Adams, Massachusetts
Deadline: January 8, 2021

Artists-in-residence receive private studio space on MASS MoCA’s campus, housing, shared use of printmaking and weaving equipment, a daily meal with other residents, and more. Financial aid can be provided.

A Studio in the Woods
New Orleans, Louisiana
Deadline: January 9, 2021

The Studio in the Woods seeks Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, people of color speculative fiction writers working in prose, poetry, and stage or screenwriting. Writers will receive a stipend of $5,000, a 6-week residency at over 18 months, Tulane University library access, and staff support from the presenting partners.

Joshua Tree Highland Artist Residency
Joshua Tree National Park, California
Deadline: January 10, 2021

Artists at all stages of their careers and working in all media are welcome apply to this residency in Joshua Tree. Residents receive living and working space, a $1,500 stipend, and more.

Tulsa Artist Fellowship
Tulsa, Oklahoma

Grounded in social change, this fellowship provides an equitable environment for a diverse community of artists in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The fellowship comes with $40,000 stipend over two years, a fully subsidized private studio space in Tulsa, and more.

Hambidge Center Creative Residency
Rabun Gap, Georgia
Deadline: January 15, 2021

This residency is open to visual artists, writers, dancers, musicians, ceramicists, arts, cultural administrators, and creative thinkers of all kinds. Each resident has a private studio & living space, with socially distanced meals provided four nights a week.

Pilchuck Glass School Emerging Artist Residency
Stanwood, Washington
Deadline: January 15, 2021

This residency serves promising younger artists who have had previous experience working with glass. Artists receive $1,000, open studio space, shared cooking facilities, and a private room in a cottage with shared bath.

BBA Gallery Artist Prize
Berlin, Germany
Deadline: January 17, 2021

Emerging artists are welcome to apply for this art prize. The first place artist will receive a solo exhibition at the gallery, promotion through the gallery’s Artsy page, and €1,000.

Clermont, Kentucky

For this residency based in an arboretum, artists receive rustic housing, access to studio space, financial and staff support for the development of new, site-specific work.

I-Park’s 2021 Site-Responsive Art Residency & Biennale
East Haddam, Connecticut

This residency is devoted exclusively to the artists and other site-responsive practitioners whose works will be exhibited at I-Park’s 2021 Biennale. Artists receive, living and work space, a stipend of $3,500, along with economy travel costs.

This year’s residency is dedicated to BIPOC artists who are mothers. Artists will receive studio and living space, career counseling, and a $1,500 stipend.

This residency is an in-person seeks to bring together an intimate cohort of Black, Indigenous, Queer, and Trans artists, activists, healers, herbalists, writers, thinkers, choreographers, and dancers of Culture. This year’s pilot version will take place within the dance studios of the University of the Arts in Pennyslvania.

Artadia identifies innovative visual artists through an open application and supports them with unrestricted financial awards worth between $25,000 and $10,000. The Los Angeles Award cycle is open to visual artists living and working within Los Angeles County.

Wave Farm Radio Artist Residency
Los Angeles County, California

Wave Farm allows artists to concentrate on new radio artworks and conduct research. Artists receive a $700, accommodations, and access to the institution’s resource library.

Artists can apply for the opportunity to access Locust Project’s gallery space and resources to create ambitious, large-scale new work. Artists receive curatorial guidance, a production budget, artist WAGE fee, documentation, and an opportunity to stay in the gallery’s residency house.

The MediaMaker Fellowship is devoted to supporting documentary filmmakers grappling with critical issues of our time. Filmmakers receive $10,000, professional mentorship and strategy sessions focused on documentary storytelling, career sustainability, fundraising, distribution, and more.

Do you have an unanticipated opportunity to present your work? Did you incur an unexpected expense that you didn’t budget for? The Foundation for Contemporary Arts offers Emergency Grants between $200 and $2,500 for visual and performing artists. They review applications once a month, so you can quickly take advantage of momentum or solve any budget errors.

The Joan Mitchell Foundation provides grants of up to $6,000 to US-based visual artists who have suffered significant physical losses after natural or man-made disasters.
