The Acoustic Bicycle Tour

Taylor Ho Bynum is an artist and cornettist who navigates the intersections between structure and improvisation.

Artist Bio

The Acoustic Bicycle Tour is a performance journey in which Taylor Ho Bynum will travel solely on bicycle, presenting solo concerts and playing with ensembles of area musicians. The endeavor is an act of composition, a performance art piece, a philosophical statement, a celebration of musical community and an exercise in extreme physicality. Bynum sees clear analogies between choosing to travel by bike and the pursuit of creative music: the trip may be slower and more arduous, but it is ultimately more rewarding in its acoustic pleasures and unexpected delights.

Taylor Ho Bynum

New Haven, CT

Taylor Ho Bynum has spent his career navigating the intersections between structure and improvisation—through musical composition, performance and interdisciplinary collaboration, and through production, organizing, teaching, writing and advocacy. Bynum’s expressionistic playing on cornet and his expansive vision as composer have garnered him critical attention on over twenty recordings as a bandleader and dozens more as a sideman, as documented on the critically acclaimed 4-album set “Navigation” from 2013, and the debut recording of his 15-piece PlusTet creative orchestra coming in the fall of 2016.His varied endeavors include his Acoustic Bicycle Tours (where he travels to concerts solely by bike across thousands of miles) and his stewardship of Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Foundation. He is also a writer and contributor to The New Yorker, has taught at universities, festivals, and workshops worldwide, and has served as a panelist and consultant for leading funders, arts organizations, and individual artists.
