Supported by the 2020 Creative Capital Award, Florence from Ohio premieres at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in San Diego, CA on November 8, 2026.

Filmmaker Stevie Wang-Breal (2020 Creative Capital Awardee) bridges the generational divide with her mother Huang JingYing, aka Florence, who immigrated from Taipei, Taiwan to Youngstown, Ohio, where she became a pillar of her largely white community. Flaunting her St John suits and making regular appearances on a local 1980s TV cooking show, Florence carved out her own version of the American Dream.

In Florence from Ohio, Wang-Breal dresses as her mother and recreates her cooking show appearances, thereby becoming “Beta-Florence” and addressing long-simmering familial tensions. Blending dreamy nostalgia with humor and heart, Florence from Ohio is a poetic exploration of immigration, assimilation, Taiwanese American identity, and the complex bonds between mothers and daughters.
