Tara Mateik is the founder of The Society of Biological Insurgents (SBI), an embryonic cell organization that wages strategic operations to overthrow institutions of compulsory gender. In his videos and performances he typecasts himself as theoretical and cultural transvestites from pop music, competitive sport and weird science. Mateik’s work has been exhibited at venues that include The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Roebling Hall and Reena Spaulings in New York, the Black Maria Film Festival and LACE in Los Angeles. His awards include a three-year fellowship at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an Electronic and Film Art Grant from the Experimental Television Center.
Men With Missing Parts
Men With Missing Parts resurrects Dorothy as a Diana Ross impersonator in a mash-up of The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz. Diana Ross’s greatest hits, sung live, punctuate a queer narrative of the “friends of Dorothy.” Mateik performs the title roles, The Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and Cowardly Lion. As a send-up to the fantastical “realness” in Oz, characters lip-sync to audio from the 1939 film. The performance will tour, casting local Diana Ross impersonators and Wizards to play live guitar. Men With Missing Parts will also be produced as single channel musical videos.
