Artist Bio

Pine Flat is a film and series of photographs created over a three year period that addresses the experience of an American childhood, using the stunning landscape of America’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, and documenting the close relationships of children with their natural surroundings. Sharon Lockhart constructed a portrait studio in the rural village of Pine Flat, extended an open invitation for the local children to stop by, and then immersed herself in their lives and their environment. In the resulting two-hour-and-fifteen-minute film, and her almost painterly still portraits, Lockhart achieves an intimacy with her subjects that provides a unique and moving glimpse of rural America, discovering a sense of place by picturing its children.
