Sekou Sundiata performed extensively as both a bandleader and a poet. He performed at the Smithsonian and was featured on Bill Moyer’s The Language of Life series on poetry. He and Craig Harris created and produced five works for theater. He received fellowships from Sundance Film Institute, New York Foundation for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, and received the New School’s Distinguished University Teaching award.

Sundiata died on July 18, 2007, in Valhalla, New York. He was 58 years old.

A dramatic opera fusing lyrical poetry, epistolary prose, and dialogue with a score, Udu is the story of a woman who is enslaved in present day Mauritania, who steals a slave narrative written in 1789 from her master, and summons the author for assistance.
