Joseph Schneider

Joseph Schneider has exhibited his work at P.S.1, the Drawing Center and other spaces in New York; The Fundacio La Caixa in Barcelona, Spain; The Center for Contemporary Art in Seattle, Washington; and the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art in Ohio. He has received funding from the Oregon State Arts commission and Ed and Nancy Kienholz; he also participated in P.S.1’s National Studio Program. While living in New York, Schneider studied privately with painter Robert Gilmore for twelve years and also studied dance with Pierre Dulaine, the director of American Ballroom Theater.

Artist BioThe Doll Cathedral is a 40-foot-tall Gothic Cathedral built out of Ken, Barbie, G.I. Joe and other action figure dolls. Working with members of his small Oregon community, Joseph Schneider creates the sculpture for a site adjacent to a national scenic area off an Oregon state highway; his primary intended audience is tourists. Inspired by everything from consumer culture to Tantric Buddhism to the story of the Garden of Eden, The Doll Cathedral is a humorous, outrageous look at the sacred and profane, culture, community, and commodity.
