Ready, Set, Create!: Upcoming Fellowship and Residency Opportunities

Sometimes the resource you need to create is a good bout of uninterrupted time, which in our ceaseless schedules can become a luxury—costly and elusive. Residencies and grants reinvigorate neglected practices and can provide the final push for an ambitious project. We’ve scoped out some opportunities for artists and writers to find solitude and support around the country and the world. 

Tabakalera Artist Residency
San Sebastián, Spain
Deadline: November 5, 2016
Through the residency programme for 2017, Tabakalera intends to invite artists, curators and other cultural agents to apply for a residency to develop different projects. The open call covers three different kinds of residency and a total of nine proposals will be selected by a mixed commission.
Sally Centigrade Gallery Artist Residency
Denver, Colorado
Deadline: November 6, 2016
Sally Centigrade Gallery programs offers a residence and studio space for 1-3 months in Denver. The artist will be given the chance to display their work as part of the program, either as a pop up show a full length show run depending on the length of the residency. The artist will be expected to be in the art gallery approximately 21 hours a week, which will give them a space to create but also allow for interaction with art patrons and be taught valuable aspects of the art scene.
Triple Canopy Call for Proposals
Deadline: November 13, 2016
Triple Canopy is looking for artists and writers with coherent proposals for projects that can be realized in one year or less. Commission recipients receive 8-12 months of artistic, editorial and technical support, a $1,500 honorarium, the opportunity to use Triple Canopy’s venue at 264 Canal Street for a performance or other public event, coordination and production of any print publication or live event.
Warwick Stafford Fellowship
Newcastle, United Kingdom
Deadline: November 14, 2016
Northumbria University is accepting applications for the Warwick Stafford Fellowship program. The Fellowship will offer an early-mid career artist a structured opportunity to advance their practice and research and engage with a stimulating community of professional artists, students, fine art researchers and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art partners. Chosen candidates will receive a £20,000 bursary, a studio space in the BxNU Institute for Contemporary Art at BALTIC 39, technical support, participation in an environment of postgraduate and PhD art researchers and access to leading academics and internationally renowned artists.
Laboratory Residency
Spokane, Washington
Deadline: November 18, 2016
The Laboratory residency is open to interactive artists looking to spend 1-3 months working  in Spokane, Washington. The program focuses on works that are interactive in that they directly respond to the viewer. The residency provides a private bedroom in a 2 bedroom apartment, access to studio space on the floor below and a $200/month living stipend.
Wave Pool Art Space Is Your Space Community Artist in Residency Program
Cincinnati, Ohio
Deadline: November 20, 2016
The Wave Pool Art Space Is Your Space Program awards sponsored residencies to local, national, and international artists interested in engaging Cincinnati with their artistic practice. Residencies of 2-6 weeks include flexible live/work studio space, a month long exhibition in our gallery (when appropriate), opportunities for artistic community engagement and programming, and modest travel/living stipends. Residents become part of the dynamic artistic community of Cincinnati, Ohio and are asked to engage the community in at least one public workshop, program, or performance during their stay.
Art Omi 2017 Residency Program
Ghent, New York
Deadline: November 30, 2016
Art Omi invites artists from every continent, representing a wide diversity of artistic styles and practices, to gather in rural New York State to experiment, collaborate and share ideas. During four weeks each June – July, concentrated time for creative work is balanced with the stimulation of cultural exchange and critical appraisal. Artists are provided with a private studio, shared living quarters, and meals at no cost, but are responsible for their travel and material expenses.
Akademie Schloss Solitude Residency
Stuttgart, Germany
Deadline: November 30, 2016
The Akademie Schloss Solitude is now accepting applications for its fellowship residency program. The fellowship includes a free, furnished living/working studio including electricity, water and heating. Each fellowship recipient is granted Euro 1,150 per month (plus one-time expenses incurred by the fellowship holder travelling to and from Stuttgart from his or her primary place of residence).
MFU: Miami
Miami, Florida
Deadline: December 15, 2016
The MFU: MIAMI is the pilot semester of ArtCenter/South Florida’s Fellowship Program, which brings distinguished faculty, alternative education initiatives, and cultural practitioners together in Miami to foster the exchange of knowledge. The program provides residents interested in working outside traditional disciplinary boundaries with the resources, time, and feedback to develop programs and courses that will be taught in future iterations of ArtCenter’s Program for Applied Artistic Research. The 12-week residency offers a stipend of $3750, travel expenses, and live/work housing at ArtCenter/Downtown Miami. This program welcomes applications from visual artists, curators, researchers, writers, performers, and musicians at any stage in their career.
