Uninterrupted time for art making is a must for good art-making. A residency can reinvigorate an idling practice or provide essential time to finish a big project. The list below has something for artists of all disciplines with opportunities in international metropolises and remote villages.
Asahi Artist in Residency
Omachi, Japan
Deadline: August 1, 2016
Omachi city is located at the foot of Japan alps. September, when the residency starts, is a harvest season for rice int the region. Artists are invited to send project proposals on the programs three themes—time, water, and rice cultivation.
Olson Kundig Creative Exchange Residency
Seattle, WA
Deadline: August 1, 2016
This is a residency (individual or group) within the offices of Olson Kundig, a 150 person design firm based in Seattle. With a fifty year history of collaboration, their primary focus has been on architecture, interiors, exhibit work, product design, and landscape design. Past collaborators have included artists, choreographers, writers, chefs, scientists, fashion designers, and furniture makers.
Rhizome Net Art Microgrant
New York, NY
Deadline: August 11, 2016
This year, Rhizome will award net art microgrants ranging from $500 to $1500 to fund the creation of new artworks or online exhibitions. This program is run as an open call. Submissions comprise a simple 150-word statement, a single sketch or image, and a brief statement of financial need.
360 XOCHI QUETZAL
Chapala, Mexico
Deadline: August 7, 2016
The program, located on the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, provides free housing and food for one writer and one emerging artist for one month. National and international visual artists, photographers, writers, playwrights, new media makers and musicians over the age of 23 are welcome to apply.
Rucka Artist Residency
Cesis, Latvia

Rucka Artist Residency in Cesis, Latvia was founded by Latvian documentary filmmaker and photographer Kaspars Goba and producer Ieva Goba. The aim of residency is to bring together artists from different spheres (film and photography, multimedia, dance, theatre, writing, design etc.) to create artworks that address important social and environmental issues.
NARS International Artist Residency Program

The NARS International Artist Residency Program provides international or U.S. based artists with 3 or 6 month-long studio-based residencies in an in-house community of artists in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Spacious studios, studio visits, field trips artists’ talks, exhibitions, Open Studios, and other public programming are designed to offer essential professional development and access to international and local networks, in addition to the time, space, and other resources artists need to dedicate to their projects and studio practice in New York.
A Blade of Grass Fellowship
New York, NY
Deadline: September 19, 2016
A one-year fellowship for individual artists and collectives. Fellowships pair project support of $20,000 with strategic support, field research tools, video documentation, and other tailored resources for socially engaged artists working nationwide. A Blade of Grass supports seven to ten artists or collectives per year, who are selected via an open application process.
