Shih Chieh Huang

Taiwanese-born Shih Chieh Huang has exhibited his sculptures and installations at the Busan Biennial, Aichi Triennial, 52nd Venice Biennale, Biennial Zero1 San Jose, Biennial Cuvée in Austria, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and MOCA Shanghai. His solo exhibitions have been held at RISD Museum of Art, Beall Center for Art and Technology and MOCA Taipei. In 2010, Huang received an Artist Research Fellowship from the Smithsonian Institution, which culminated with a solo exhibition in the Museum of Natural History’s Ocean Hall Focus Gallery in September 2011. Huang’s other awards include a Rockefeller Foundation New Media Arts Fellowship, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Sculpture Award, two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships and residencies at Art Omi, Skowhegan and The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. Huang received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts and is based in New York City.

Shih Chieh Huang
Artist BioEX-SE-10 is a series of room-sized installations comprised of computer-driven sculptures that react to viewers and each other. Shih Chieh Huang appropriates modern household appliances and materials—including lights, computer parts and plastic tubing—and reprograms them using original computer algorithms. EX-SE-10 draws on research on the adaptability of bioluminescent marine life via Huang’s fellowship at the Museum of Natural History. Placed together, the sculptures mimic ecosystems that evolve according to their interactions with each other, their environment and people.
