Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in May and June, 2020

As organizations are weighing their options to reopen after the COVID-19 crisis, some have pushed their timelines to the late summer and fall. Many still have open applications for grants, residencies, and other opportunities for artists, which we have compiled. The Arts Writers Grant Program’s application is currently open through May 20. The grants support visual arts writers with grants in articles, books, and short-form writing.

Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship
Deadline: May 6, 2020

This fellowship supports Minnesota or New York City-based artists, early in their careers with $50,000 over two consecutive years to support creation of new work, artistic development, and professional artistic career development.

Rose Fellowship
Deadline: May 10, 2020

Architects, socially-engaged creative practitioners, teaching artists, and culture bearers working in all disciplines can apply for this fellowship. The program partners architects and artists with local community development organizations to develop an inclusive approach that creates and preserves sustainable, healthy and affordable communities.

Tournesol Award
Deadline: May 11, 2020

The Tournesol Award recognizes one painter in the Bay Area, supporting them with a $10,000 cash stipend, a private studio, and access to Headlands’ creative community.

AFIELD Mentorship Program

Artists will be granted $1,500 of seed funding to develop their initiatives and will receive advice from a mentor, meant to encourage and support early initiatives in their initial development.

This residency is perfect for emerging and mid-career artists working in a variety of styles and media. Studio spaces are best suited to artists working in two-dimensional media.

The Studios of Key West
Key West, Florida
Deadline: May 18, 2020

This community-based, one month residency is open to visual artists, writers, composers, performers, and interdisciplinary artists. The program is built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s people and rich artistic culture.

National Park Arts Foundation Artist Residency
Loggerhead Key, Florida
Deadline: May 20, 2020

This residency allows artists to go off the grid and complete their work. Residents will be housed in a solar-powered house in Florida with all the amenities, and receive $2,000.

Anne LaBastille Memorial Writers Residency
New York, New York
Deadline: May 21, 2020

The Adirondack Center for Writing offers a two-week residency in October to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. The program offers indoor and outdoor writing spaces, family-style meals, and fireside discussions at a lakeside lodge in the Adirondack Mountains.

Abrons Artist Residency

This residency offers four New York City-based visual artists a nine-month residency, which includes a studio, visits with curators and arts workers, a $3,000 unrestricted stipend, a culminating group exhibition in Abrons’ galleries, and more.

This open call seeks artists to submit their qualifications to be commissioned to create an original artwork with accompanying sound as part of Art on theMART, an innovative digital public art platform. Selected artists will receive $10,000 to exhibit their work.

This 18-month fellowship program supports filmmakers from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities working on their first or second feature length documentary film. This is an open call for artists who work with radio through formats like poetic resuscitations of conventional radio drama, documentary, interview and news formats. Artists receive a $15,000 stipend, support, access to the Wave Farm research library and radio studios, and more.

The Latino Public Broadcasting has two separate open application for documentary filmmakers making films from a Latino-American perspective. Funding will help filmmakers with production and post-production funding, or with online distribution.

This prize recognizes artists’ role in the movement to end mass incarceration in the US. $25,000 will go to an artist for an existing work of art that can contribute to the movement to end mass incarceration.

Do you have an unanticipated opportunity to present your work? Did you incur an unexpected expense that you didn’t budget for? The Foundation for Contemporary Arts offers Emergency Grants between $200 and $2,500 for visual and performing artists. They review applications once a month, so you can quickly take advantage of momentum or solve any budget errors.

The Joan Mitchell Foundation provides grants of up to $6,000 to US-based visual artists who have suffered significant physical losses after natural or man-made disasters.
