Untitled Project: Mail Order Catalog
Untitled Project: Mail Order Catalog is a fully-functional mail order catalog that features singular, hand-carved replicas of items that might normally appear on the pages of mail order catalogs. It functions as an actual commercial catalog, from which handcrafted objects can be purchased, and as an investigation of the complex relationship between people and things.
Conrad Bakker makes carved and painted sculptures of everyday objects and places them in consumer contexts or gallery exhibitions to reveal and critically comment upon the political economies and relational networks between persons and things. Bakker has exhibited his work internationally, including Tate Modern (London), Galerie Analix Forever (Geneva), Fargfabriken Center for Contemporary Art and Architecture (Stockholm), the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York), the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (Chicago), Art in General, Artists’ Space and Apex Art (New York City), Lora Reynolds Gallery (Austin), Contemporary Art Museum Houston, in mailboxes and on his front lawn. His work has been the subject of articles and reviews in Frieze, Contemporary, Flash Art, Art Forum, Art World Magazine, ArtUS, Art Papers, Sculpture, UOVO, The Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine. Conrad Bakker has been awarded individual artist grants from the Creative Capital Foundation, The Illinois Arts Council and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant Program. Recent projects include: Untitled Project: Record Shop [Les révolutions de tous les jours] with Galerie Analix Forever for the Show Off Solo Show Art Fair, Paris, Untitled Project: Seasonal Economies at the BCA Center in Burlington, Vermont and Untitled Project: eBay/Cypraea moneta, an artists project for Cabinet Magazine.
