Creative Capital Announces Wild Futures 2024 Open Call for Visual Arts and Film

Applications Are Open March 1–31, 2023.

“Creative Capital funding is making my project possible! The impact cannot be overstated.”—Martine Syms, 2021 Creative Capital Grantee

Creative Capital is pleased to announce that the 2024 Open Call for Visual Arts and Film will launch on March 1, 2023. The 2024 visual arts and film grant cycle: “Wild Futures: Art, Culture, Impact” invites artists to propose experimental, risk-taking projects in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, time-based art, video art, narrative film, documentary film, experimental film, multidisciplinary, and socially engaged forms which push boundaries formally and thematically, and/or venture into wild, out-there, never-before-seen concepts and future universes real or imagined.

Past Creative Capital grantees in the visual arts and film include: Simone Leigh, Jeffrey Gibson, Nick Cave, Theaster Gates, Garrett Bradley, Lorraine O’Grady, Jennie C. Jones, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Titus Kaphar, Laura Poitras, Zoe Leonard, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Cory Arcangel, Mel Chin, Guadalupe Maravilla, Yance Ford, Reid Davenport, Martine Syms, and Nikyatu Jusu.

In response to feedback from artists, Creative Capital has completely redesigned the application to respect artists’ time and labor, reducing the application to six (6) short questions in Round I from 40 questions. Creative Capital seeks proposals for groundbreaking new projects—including, but not limited to, work that attends to the many relationships between social, economic, and environmental justice, and advances the global dialogue around critical issues impacting the sustainability of artists, our communities, our planet, and beyond. Distinguishing itself from other grant organizations, Creative Capital sees innovation as its primary selection criterion, with an emphasis on championing groundbreaking projects and ideas. While selecting projects that are interesting, genre-stretching, and adventurous is at the core of its mission, Creative Capital welcomes multidisciplinary projects as well as projects that push boundaries within a single genre. All applications are reviewed by an external review committee of scholars, curators, artists, past awardees, and experts in their field.

Awardees will receive up to $50,000 in direct project funding, advisory services, mentorship, and community-building opportunities. Funding is unrestricted and may be used on any expenses related to the creation of the project, including but not limited to: staffing, supplies, computers, software, studio repairs, childcare, healthcare, mental health care, travel, research, and more. Creative Capital encourages a spirit of mutual generosity among its awardees and seeks to foster exchange through its artist gatherings. Creative Capital has helped more than 900 artists realize their projects since its inception in 1999. Awardees for the open call will be announced in January 2024.
