Kaneza Schaal’s (2016 Awardee) KLII summons the specter of King Leopold II to exorcize his nefarious legacy. Weaving history, opera, and East African music, the work draws from Aimé Césaire, Patrice Lumumba, and La Muette de Portici, confronting racism, misogyny, and misinformation to interrogate the past and present.
