In this 90-minute online workshop led by James Scruggs, artists will learn best practices for producing and selecting work samples to use in applications for grants, awards, residencies, and other opportunities. James is a Creative Capital Awardee and has also sat in on panels for Chashama, New Jersey State Council for The Arts, Mid Atlantic Arts Fund, HERE Arts Center, and Yaddo Artist Residency.

During this session, James will provide:

  • Notes on what to look for in a photographer/videographer and how to direct them
  • Tips for selecting and editing accurate and memorable work samples
  • Advice on how to use careful editing to make your project more clear
  • First-hand insight on what happens behind the scenes during the panel decision-making process

This workshop is a great chance to hear advice from someone with a perspective as both an artist/applicant and panel reviewer. To close the presentation, James will join a mock panel to provide real time, spontaneous feedback on work samples for a few in-studio audience members. James will be joined by Creative Capital awardees Carrie Schneider and Arturo Vidich for this portion of the workshop.
