Why is it so difficult to imagine an alternative to the internet today? That is one of the questions at the heart of Zach Blas’s Creative Capital project Contra-Internet, which has premiered at Gasworks. Inspired by queer science fiction, Contra-Internet is a series of a works that critiques and provides alternatives to the oppressive, corporate and hegemonic forces that control the internet.

"How and why did the internet transition from an arena of political potentiality to a premiere site of control? Here, I think back to the cyberfeminism movement of the 1990s. Incredible to recall, with the advent of the world wide web, that the cyberfeminists saw cyberspace as a potential site of liberation. Now, this online option for liberation seems to have disappeared."

Zach Blas is an artist whose work engages technology, queerness and politics. Currently, he is a Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London. Blas has exhibited and lectured internationally, most recently at ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe; Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; e-flux, New York; Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; and the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. His work has been written about and featured in Artforum, Frieze, Art Papers, Hyperallergic, Mousse Magazine, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera America and Art Review, in which Hito Steyerl selected him as a 2014 FutureGreat. Blas is currently producing two books, Escaping the Face (Rhizome and Sternberg Press, 2016) and Informatic Opacity: The Art of Defacement in Biometric Times (in preparation). He holds a PhD in Literature from Duke University and has published writings in the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest; You are Here: Art after the Internet (Cornerhouse Books); and DIS Magazine.
