Sam Cullman is a cinematographer, producer and director of documentaries with over a decade of experience. He produced and shot the Sundance Grand Jury prize winner, The House I Live In (2012), directed by Eugene Jarecki. Previously, Cullman partnered with director Marshall Curry to co-direct, shoot and produce If A Tree Falls (2011), which was awarded the U.S. Documentary Editing Award at Sundance 2011 and then later received a nomination for a 2011 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award. He is currently working on a documentary about a prolific (and still active) art forger due for completion in 2013. Cullman also finished Black Cherokee, a short he made with Benjamin Rosen. Cullman’s cinematography has appeared in dozens of documentaries including Reagan (2011), King Corn (2006) and Why We Fight (2005). A graduate of Brown University (1999) with Honors in Visual Art and a second major in Urban Studies, Sam currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

If a Tree Falls is a feature-length documentary that offers a behind-the-curtain look at the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), the radical environmental group that the FBI calls America’s ”number one domestic terrorist threat.” The film tells the story of Daniel McGowan, an ELF member who participated in two multi-million dollar arsons against Oregon timber companies. If a Tree Falls explores how a working class kid from Queens (the son of a New York cop who was a business major in college) found himself facing life in prison for “eco-terrorism.”

Marshall Curry

Marshall Curry got his start shooting, editing, and directing the documentary Street Fight, which follows Cory Booker’s first run for mayor of Newark, NJ. It aired on PBS, the BBC, and HBO Latin America, and was nominated for an Academy Award and an Emmy. After Street Fight, Curry was the director and producer, as well as one of the cinematographers and editors of the documentary Racing Dreams, which follows three children who dream of racing in NASCAR. The film won numerous awards, including Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival. Curry’s Creative Capital Project–in which he was director, editor and writer–If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, won the Sundance Film Festival award for Best Documentary Editing and was nominated for an Academy Award. Curry was the Executive Producer of Mistaken For Strangers, which was the opening night film for the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.
