Roman J. Witt Residency Program at the University of Michigan

The mission of the Roman J. Witt Residency Program is to support the production of new work at the University of Michigan. Open to both established and emerging artists and designers, the program awards one residency each academic year.

The 2025–2026 Witt Residency is organized in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), specially themed to explore the upcoming United States Semiquincentennial (2026). The Witt Residency especially encourages social practice and performance artists with an interest in issues of national identity, commemorative practices and memory, and the history and future of the United States, to apply. The selected artist will work with partners at the Museum of Art and the Witt Residency to conceptualize, design, mount and produce a performance, activation, or intervention in the Museum of Art’s Lizzie and Jonathan Tish Apse in the Fall of 2026.

Smack Mellon Open Call for Emerging Artists: Summer Group Exhibition

Smack Mellon seeks artwork submissions for a summer group exhibition to be guest-curated by New York City-based writer and curator Pallavi Surana. This exhibition conceptually departs from the salt marsh—a transitional zone between terrestrial and aquatic environments that provides critical habitat for a variety of species. As ecosystems, salt marshes carry an inherent tension and exist as intermediaries: between land and sea, and between a perceived desolation and vitality.

This residency awards up to 4 residencies a year to artists whose art ignites wonder, sparks curiosity, and brings people closer to nature. The program includes a $2,500 stipend along with the opportunity to live at Bernheim Forest and create site specific work inspired by their total immersion experience in the natural environment. 2025-2026 Folger Institute Long-Term Public Humanities Fellowship
Deadline: December 15, 2024

This 9-month fellowship awards a $70,000 stipend and is designed to draw on the strengths of the Folger’s collections, exhibitions, and programming themes. The fellow will be expected to devote 75% of their residency to research and 25% to implementing public humanities engagement for Folger audiences, in cooperation with Folger Institute staff. Applicants must propose and detail four touchstones of public humanities engagement they will develop and implement, and are not required to hold a terminal degree but should describe their equivalent training and industry-specific experience in their CV.

2025–2027 Vera List Center Focus Theme Matter of Intelligence and Open Call

These fellowships support the development and presentation of outstanding art and research projects by international, emerging artists, writers, scholars, and activists. Fellowship project proposals must creatively and rigorously approach the Focus Theme “Matter of Intelligence” in content and form and make an intellectual and artistic contribution that advances the understanding of intelligence. 2025-2026 Folger Institute Artistic Research Fellowships

Fellowships are open to all artists whose work would benefit from significant primary research related to the histories, concepts, art, and objects of the early modern world (ca. 1400-1800) and its legacies. Artistic applicants are not required to hold a formal degree, but should describe their training and level of industry-specific experience in their CV.
