Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in July and August, 2021

Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes an artist residency in Los Angeles that comes with a $15,000 stipend, a fellowship for artists who work with plants, gardens, or landscapes, and a residency for US Latinx artists based in Arizona.

Hercules Art Studio
New York, New York
Deadline: July 1, 2021

This program supports emerging visual artists who are intending to pursue their careers in New York City. Artists will have sole access to an individual studio for two years, and are offered at a subsidized monthly rent of $300.

Ginkgo Bioworks Creative Residency
Boston, Massachusetts
Deadline: July 4, 2021

This residency program invites you to spend three months with Ginkgo working at the intersection of your creative discipline and synthetic biology. Artists working in all disciplines can apply, and selected residents receive $5,000 monthly stipend.

Interchange Artist Grant

Grants of $20,000 will be awarded to sixteen artists with an active socially-engaged creative practice in the mid-America Arts Alliance region.

The Neon Museum National Artist Residency
Las Vegas, Nevada
Deadline: July 11, 2021

This residency opportunity, open to artists working in the fields of digital, performance, or visual arts. Selected artists will be provided with a self-contained apartment and studio space in downtown Las Vegas, a $2,500 honorarium, and material and travel stipends.

Bulington Magazine Contemporary Art Writing Prize
Deadline: July 12, 2021

This prize recognizes writers addressing contemporary art with £1,000. Their review will be published on the Burlington Contemporary platform and they will also have the opportunity to publish a review of a future contemporary art exhibition in The Burlington Magazine.

Critical Writing Fellowship

Eyebeam and Momus have teamed up for this fellowship that will provide sustained mentorship, editing, art-publishing access, and a network of artists, writers, and editors building to an early-career art writer or critic. Fellows will receive $4,000 honorarium for an 8-month engagement.

Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan’s Artist-in-Residence Program
Los Angeles, California

This three-month residency is open to emerging and mid-career artists working in all disciplines across Greater Los Angeles. The selected artists will receive a stipend of $5,000/month, along with a space to create artwork, and inclusion in a group exhibition.

Botanical Artist-in-Residence Program
Upperville, Virginia
Deadline: July 15, 2021

The Oak Spring Garden Foundation offers a residency in their formal garden and broader 700-acre landscape, open to national and international botanical artists who can create beautiful and scientifically accurate depictions of plant species. Accepted residents will receive a $1,000 grant, and an offer to purchase one final work on paper for $1,000.

Knoxville, Tennessee

This residency is located on ninety acres of woodland in Knoxville, Tennessee. All artists are awarded stipends to support the creation of new work during the residency.

The Oak Spring Garden Foundation awards this fellowship to one emerging artist who is developing new works that address plants, gardens, or landscapes in the broad sense. It is open to visual artists, literary artists, dancers, and musicians and includes a $10,000 individual grant and a residency.

#BlackDesignVisionaries Aspiring Designer & Small Business Grants

Brooklyn Museum and Instagram’s @design have teamed up to give out three $10,000 grants to aspiring Black designers between the ages of 18 and 30, as well as one $100,000 grant to a small, Black-led design business no more than 10 years into its practice.

City Artist Corps Grants

City Artist Corps Grants are intended to support NYC-based working artists who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. The program will distribute one-time $5,000 grants to over 3000 artists to help sustain their practice and engage the public across New York City’s five boroughs. Ox-Bow Longform Artist Residency

This mentorship-style program that foregrounds experimental and continued education outside of traditional systems of learning. Longform brings together a diverse group of artists, providing time and space to grow conceptually, and through intentional shared experiences. While the residency charges tuition, there are five positions for fully funded residents.

This residency program aims to strengthen the cultural relevancy of US Latinx artists with an honorarium of $4,000, a materials stipend of $4,000, and studio space. The resident will be housed in CALA’s residency space in Central Phoenix.

Betty Bowen Award

This award is open to visual artists working in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho. Administered by the Seattle Art Museum, the award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. The winner is receives $15,000 and will be able to show their work at the museum in the spring. Up to two Special Recognition Awards in the amount of $2,500 will also be granted. There is a $10 application fee.

New York City-based artists, activists, neighbors, designers, organizers, healers, storytellers, and cultural producers can apply for this fellowship to explore social practices through a community engagement lens. The program will consist of a series of hybrid virtual and in-person convenings to engage the Laundromat Project’s community-based art pedagogy and practices, which center collaborative, cooperative, and co-created art projects.

McColl Center Educators and Parents Artist-in-Residence Program
Charlotte, North Carolina

This residency is offered to educators and parents who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in McColl Center residencies because of responsibilities during school or university terms. Selected artists will receive a $6,000, a furnished apartment for the duration of the program, a private studio, and participation in a group exhibition. There is a $35 application fee.

Baltimore, Maryland

This $15,000 grant is open to artists living in Baltimore City and Baltimore County working in literary, media, performing, or visual arts. The program is open to artists at any stage of their career and favors projects that have significant creative work left to accomplish.

Bemis Center Artist Residency
Omaha, Nebraska

This residency program is open to artists working in all disciplines. Selected artists will receive a private live/work space in Omaha’s arts and culture district, access to installation and production spaces, a space for large-scale sculpture fabrication, and a sound studio for rehearsing and recording, and a $1,000 monthly stipend. There is a $40 application fee.

Visual artists can apply to Joan Mitchell Center’s residency, based in New Orleans. Artists will receive a private studio, weekday meals, a $600 monthly stipend, and a range of professional development and public engagement opportunities.

S+T+ARTS4Water Open Call
Europe

STARTS4Water Consortium invites professional and experienced artists from any art-related field to apply for one of ten residencies in Belgium, Austria, Croatia, The Netherlands, Greece, or Italy. The goal is to kick-start a series of collaborative processes between artists, researchers and communities that generate projects to raise awareness and/or offer concrete solutions for regional water challenges in Europe. The budget for each residency is 40,000€, including artwork production and artist fee.

Toni Beauchamp Prize in Critical Art Writing

The Toni Beauchamp Prize in Critical Art Writing seeks to address that there are significant lack of venues and support for young and mid-career writers working across the US by recognizing writers that are dealing with the spirit of the age and unafraid to ask difficult questions.
