Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in May and June, 2021
Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes a residency for artist-parents, a residency in Palm Springs for Black trans visual artists, a $50,000 fellowship to take projects to their next level, and an 18-month documentary lab.
The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant application is open through May 19. This grant, administered by Creative Capital, is open to arts writers producing articles, books, and short-form writing.
NOT REAL ART Grant
Deadline: May 1, 2021
The grant provides $2,000 each to six contemporary artists working in the visual arts. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and reside in the US or Canada.
William Greaves Fund Open Call
Deadline: May 1, 2021
The William Greaves Fund is open to mid-career nonfiction filmmakers from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities in the US, and filmmakers in Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Colombia, with particular interest in those who identify as Indigenous and/or of African descent. It awards up to $40,000 to support research and development on feature-length nonfiction films.
Queens Arts Artist Commissioning Program
Queens, New York
Deadline: May 2, 2021
The Artist Commissioning Program is looking for proposals for Queens choreographers, dance artists, and small dance organizations. Artists who receive a commission will earn a $250 stipend.
Wassaic Project Winter Residency
Wassaic, New York
Deadline: May 5, 2021
The Wassaic Project offers 3-6 month residencies open to individual artists, collaborative teams, and groups of 2 or more individual artists opting to live together. The residency supports emerging and professional artists, writers, curators, filmmakers and other creatives. There is a $25 application fee.
Roddenberry Fellowship
Deadline: May 7, 2021
This fellowship offers artists $50,000 to take an existing project to the next level and amplify its impact, or to launch a new initiative.
Bemis Center Curator-in-Residence Open Call
Omaha, Nebraska
Deadline: May 14, 2021
This fully subsidized live/work residency is open to applicants with a strong knowledge of national and international contemporary art and a genuine interest in researching and responding to cultural production in Omaha and the region.
Art Business Accelerator Grant
Deadline: May 14, 2021
Open to emerging and established visual artists, this grant distributes $2,500 in unrestricted funds to invest in art businesses, as well as six weeks of self-guided online educational resources to build business skills.
McColl Center for Art + Innovation Residency
Charlotte, North Carolina
Deadline: May 15, 2021
This is a nationally acclaimed artist residency and contemporary art space committed to putting artists first with all types of support, including artist studios, modern equipment and tools, and exhibition spaces. The residency comes with a $6,000 stipend.
Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Residency
Amherst, Virginia
Deadline: May 15, 2021
National and international writers, visual artists, and composers can apply for this time and space to work in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is an application fee of $50.
Abrons Arts Center Parent Artist Residency
New York, New York
Deadline: May 16, 2021
This residency provides support for one parent artist of a child ages 6-8 years old working in the visual arts, music, curatorial practice, and/or literary arts. It comes with studio space, free tuition to Abrons Arts Camp for 1 child, a stipend, and opportunities for intergenerational engagement.
World Trade Center Artist Residency
New York, New York

Artists working to address social justice and activism are welcome to apply to the Silver Art Projects’ artist residency, which comes with mentors, workshops and more.
The Studios of Key West Residency
Key West, Florida

Visual artists, writers, composers, musicians, media artists, performers, and interdisciplinary artists can apply for a month-long residency program. Application fee is $40.
Ruffin Gallery Call for Exhibition Proposals
Charlottesville, Virginia
Deadline: May 17, 2021
The Ruffin Gallery at the University of Virginia is seeking proposals for solo exhibitions from recent MFA graduates and emerging artists. The exhibiting artist will receive a $500 honoraria and the gallery will provide a maximum budget of $1,500 to cover transportation and artwork shipping costs.
Art for Black Lives Artist Residency
Palm Springs, California

This artist residency is open to Black Trans visual artists. The residency supports artists with a live work and space for a month in Palm Springs, and a $2,000 stipend.

Art on the River Call for Proposals
Dubuque, Iowa

The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs in Iowa is accepting sculpture submissions for the Mississippi riverwalk in Dubuque. Selected artists receive a $1,800 stipend for each work included in the exhibition, and additional cash prizes are available.
Collective Imagination for Spatial Justice Grant

These grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 support Massachusetts-based imagination teams that are dreaming up public art that can help us see, feel, experience, and imagine justice now without the pressure of having to predetermine a project that may come out of the imagination stage.

Dome House Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency

This residency offers two mid-career artists working in the mediums of silk-screening, fine art, or photography a space to create work and a $500 stipend. The program is open to residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
2022 AIRIE Residency
Miami, Florida

This yearlong program offers fellows $4000 research grant, institutional support from AIRIE’s network and partners, and a month-long residency in the Everglades National Park. The program is open to emerging or professional artists ages 21 and over, with environmental themes in their work. There is a $10 application fee.
Cuttyhunk Island Residency
Gosnold, Massachusetts

This residency offers visual artists the time to focus on their work in a remote island setting just west of Martha’s Vineyard. Artists pay the cost of board, with scholarships available.
Kala Fellowship Award
Deadline: June 4, 2021
The Kala Fellowship award is an international competition open to artists artists producing innovative work in all mediums including printmaking, digital media, installation art, social practice, photography, and book arts. There is a $10 application fee.
The Canadian Women Artists’ Award
Deadline: June 9, 2021
This $5,000 award is open to emerging or early career female artists in New York State working in visual art or media and design.
Artadia Award
Louisville, Kentucky

Artadia and 21c Museums have partnered to grant one Louisville artist $10,000 in unrestricted funds.
Cantabrigia Award
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Deadline: June 15, 2021
The inaugural Cantabrigia Award will provide two writers or artists the resources to publish and distribute their work with a $1,000 stipend, resources like in-house editing, design, and printing, geared towards the production of a publication.
The Barbara and Carl Zydney Grant for Artists with Disabilities
Deadline: June 15, 2021
The program will distribute $1,000 to artists with a disability who have experienced financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis. The program is open to visual, media, music, performing, and literary artists who live in New York City.
Columbia Law School’s Artist-in-Residence Program
New York, New York

Columbia Law School invites an artist to create at least one work that will be displayed at the school, as part of their artist-in-residency program. The selected artist will receive a grant of $15,000 and an allowance of up to $5,000 for art materials. Preference will be given to those who are in the early to middle stages of their careers.
Doc Lab Open Call

This is an 18-month fellowship program that supports filmmakers in the US from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities working on their first or second feature-length documentary film. Firelight Media provides filmmakers with customized mentorship from prominent leaders in the documentary world, as well as funding, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities.
ACE Artist in Residence Program
Alta, Utah

This residency, open to artists nationwide and all creative disciplines, provides seven days and a $1,000 spend to reflect, relax, and create in the inspiring mountains of Alta, Utah.
The JGS Fellowship for Photography

This grant awards $7,000 to five New York State-based photography artists who are living and working outside New York City.
Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists

This $10,000 grant, awarded to draw attention to an existing body of work, sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists and provides critical support to their continuing work.
Firelight Media Documentary Lab
Deadline: June 30, 2021
The Documentary Lab provides filmmakers with a $15,000 grant toward their projects as well as customized mentorship from prominent leaders in the documentary world, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities.
Interchange Artist Grant
Deadline: July 5, 2021
Grants of $20,000 will be awarded to sixteen artists with an active socially-engaged creative practice in the mid-America Arts Alliance region.
Stochastic Labs Summer Residency
Berkeley, California

The Stochastic Labs offers fully-sponsored residencies to engineers, artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs from around the world. Residencies include a private apartment at the mansion, co-working and/or dedicated work space, shop access, a $1,000 monthly stipend and a budget for materials.
Rauschenberg Emergency Grant

NYFA and the Rasuchenberg Foundation have teamed up to offer visual and media artists and choreographers in the US grants of up to $5,000 for medical related emergencies.
Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant

Do you have an unanticipated opportunity to present your work? Did you incur an unexpected expense that you didn’t budget for? The Foundation for Contemporary Arts offers Emergency Grants between $200 and $2,500 for visual and performing artists. They review applications once a month, so you can quickly take advantage of momentum or solve any budget errors.
Joan Mitchell Emergency Grant

The Joan Mitchell Foundation provides grants of up to $6,000 to US-based visual artists who have suffered significant physical losses after natural or man-made disasters.
Gottlieb Emergency Grant Program

This emergency grant provides financial assistance to painters, printmakers, and sculptors whose needs are the result of an unforeseen incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation.
Rhizome Microgrant Program
Deadline: rolling basis
The microgrant program awards $500–$1,500 to proposals with a compelling vision for net art, which considers political radicalization and the internet.
Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism
Deadline: Rolling Basis
The Eyebeam Center for the Future of Journalism (ECFJ) is a grant-making program that supports artists producing innovative and revelatory journalistic work for major media outlets. Grant support will range from $500 to $5,000.
