Artist Opportunities with Upcoming Deadlines in April and May, 2021

Each month, we compile a list of residencies, grants, and open calls for artists working in all disciplines. This month’s list includes a residency to develop technology-based projects and a prize for Black poets looking to publish a new manuscript.

The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant application opens April 14. This grant, administered by Creative Capital, is open to arts writers producing articles, books, and short-form writing.

Franklin Furnace Fund Grant
New York, New York
Deadline: April 1, 2021

This grant supports early-career artists interested in producing major performance art works in New York City. Grants range from $2,000 to $10,000.

New York, New York
Deadline: April 1, 2021

Artadia identifies innovative visual artists through an open application and supports them with unrestricted financial awards worth between $10,000 and $25,000. The New York cycle is open to visual artists living and working within any eligible boroughs.

Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Residencies
Omaha, Nebraska
Deadline: April 1, 2021

Bemis Center has several opportunities for artists and curator to participate in their residency. Residents have access to private live/work studios, installation and production spaces, a 9,000 square foot industrial space used for large-scale sculpture fabrication, a sound studio for rehearsing and recording, and more.

Marble House Project Artist Residency
Dorset, Vermont

This residency integrates sustainable practices, including small-scale organic food production and waste conservation. Residents sustain their growth by engaging with the grounds while working on their artistic practice. Applications are accepted in all creative fields including but not limited to writing, dance and choreography, performance, music composition and sound, film and video, visual arts, and culinary arts.

Fire Island Artist Residency
Cherry Grove, New York

This residency offers five emerging artists who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer a shared live/work space in the secluded community of the historic LGBTQ settlement of Fire Island. The four-week program includes studio visits with, and public lectures by, renowned leaders in contemporary art and curation.

Pabst Blue Ribbon Open Door Grant Contest
Deadline: April 2, 2021

This grant awards a $5,000 prize to five artists, working across disciplines, with projects that make an impact in their local communities. The program is open to residents of Washington, California, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Colorado, or Oregon who are 21 or older.

Saturnalia Books Prize

Saturnalia is accepting unpublished, original poetry and book manuscripts to receive a cash prize, and publication. This year’s judge is Creative Capital Awardee Sabrina Orah Mark.

The Steel Yard

This residency offers a 10,000 square foot studio space for emerging to mid-level artists to forge, mold, weld, shape, and create. This fellowship is open to artists with professional standing in their fields, as well as emerging artists, working in architecture, film and video, multidisciplinary, literature, music composition, theater, and visual arts. The residency consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to eight weeks.

BIPOC artists with ties to Southeast Washington, DC are eligible to apply for this three month residency. Residents are paid $2,000 per month, and up to $3,000 for materials, supplies, and fees for an onsite exhibition or community program activation.

Bushwick Starr Open Call for Artwork

The Bushwick Starr, in collaboration with Whitney White, invites US-based artists to submit work within the mediums of: video, design, photography, painting, drawing, and other visual forms, speaking to the themes of Black women’s mental, physical, and sexual health. Selected work will be part of the installation, DEFINITION, by Whitney White at the Mercury Store in New York City.

Open Call: UC Berkeley Leaf Veins Artist Residency

This artist residency embedded in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley, will allow an artist to create a project inspired by leaf vein networks. The artist will help illuminate the evolution of complex networks and biomimicry applications.

The Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition gives two awards of $5,000 each and two $500 Student Fellowship Awards to resident Oklahoma artists each year. Applicant must be OVAC members.

The grant provides $2,000 each to six contemporary artists working in the visual arts. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and reside in the US or Canada.

William Greaves Fund Open Call
Deadline: May 1, 2021

The William Greaves Fund is open to mid-career nonfiction filmmakers from racially and ethnically underrepresented communities in the US, and filmmakers in Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Colombia, with particular interest in those who identify as Indigenous and/or of African descent. It awards up to $40,000 to support research and development on feature-length nonfiction films.
