Strange Foundation Decelerator in West Shokan, New York
Every month Creative Capital compiles a list of residencies, grants, and exhibition opportunities to help artists in all disciplines make new work, and expand their art practice. This month’s opportunities include financial support for artists working in emerging technologies, residencies in Joshua Tree National Park, and in the Catskill Mountains.
Applications to receive the Creative Capital Award open in February. Artists can prepare in advance to be ready to apply when we accept project proposals.

Joshua Tree Highlands Residency
Joshua Tree National Park, California

This residency fosters creativity through opportunities for exploring, experimenting, quiet reflection, engagement and cross-cultural exchange with the vibrant local artist community. Artists are supported with a $1,000 stipend, plus living accommodations and studio space.
Harvestworks New Works Residency
New York, New York
Deadline: January 10, 2020
Along with access to Harvestwork’s lab, this residency awards contemporary artists working in sound art and emerging technology a $5,000 commission to produce, document, and present a new artwork.
Institute for Electronic Arts Experimental Projects Residency
Alfred, New York
Deadline: January 15, 2020
Two residencies are designated for New York state artists working in electronic media and film, and another visual artist. The programs support artists with a one or two week residency, an artist stipend, travel-support, lodging, technology access, materials and technical assistance.

BRICLab Performance Residency

This is a commissioning and residency development program for New York City-based performing artists to explore and expand the possibilities of their work in music, dance, theater, and multidisciplinary performance. The program supports artists with stipends, mentoring, and space to develop works-in-progress.
The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society Fellowships

This one-year fellowship is designed for emerging writers based in New York at a critical moment in their career. Fellows receive access to write in the Center’s Writers Studio, opportunities to meet and work with editors, agents, and other authors, and a $5,000 grant.
Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize

Writers not yet established in nonfiction can apply to receive a $12,000 advance and publication by Graywolf Press for an innovative literary nonfiction project. The prize will be awarded to a manuscript in progress.
Flux Factory Residency

This residency is open to artists all over the world to gain access to Flux Factory’s building that houses studios, workspaces, and exhibition space.
Strange Foundation Decelerator

The Decelerator program is a short-term residency and retreat in New York’s Catskill Mountains for individuals or collaborative groups of up to 3 people. It offers free lodging in fully-equipped spaces, access to abundant nature, and on-site one-on-one mentorship sessions. This season, the foundation seeks applicants championing and protecting Earth through their work.
Soros Equality Fellowship

The Soros Equality Fellowship seeks to support emerging midcareer professionals who will become long-term innovative leaders impacting racial justice. The award provides individuals with $100,000 to support the production of an innovative racial justice project over the course of 18 months.
National Book Foundation Innovations in Reading Prize
Deadline: February 13, 2020
The National Book Foundation gives the Innovations in Reading Prize to an individual or organization that inspires readers and engages new audiences with literature. Prize-winners receive $10,000, and four projects will receive honorable mentions.
Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program

This studio program is open to artists working in any discipline nationwide. Artists will receive access to waterfront studio and communal spaces.
Architectural League American Roundtable
Deadline: February 18, 2020
American Roundtable will commission up to ten editors to prepare reports on communities from across the United States, with an emphasis on small cities, towns, and rural areas. We are striving for both geographic diversity and diversity in terms of the types of communities represented. Commissioned teams will be awarded $10,000 to support their work.
Squeaky Wheel Workspace Residency

This is a project-based residency for artists and researchers working in media arts. Residents will have tailored access to facilities, equipment, technical consultation, a $1,250 stipend, accommodations and travel support, and more.

Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant

Do you have an unanticipated opportunity to present your work? Did you incur an unexpected expense that you didn’t budget for? The Foundation for Contemporary Arts offers Emergency Grants between $200 and $2,500 for visual and performing artists. They review applications once a month, so you can quickly take advantage of momentum or solve any budget errors.
Gottlieb Emergency Grant Program

This emergency grant provides financial assistance to painters, printmakers, and sculptors whose needs are the result of an unforeseen incident, and who lack the resources to meet that situation.
Rhizome Microgrant Program

The microgrant program awards $500–$1,500 to proposals with a compelling vision for net art, which considers political radicalization and the internet.
