The Cost of Life examines the ethical, emotional and economic costs of producing and sustaining life through three related but independent projects, each looking at a different aspect of this overarching topic. The first project, tentatively titled The Lab, is a video diptych that puts the story of a lab mouse used in breast cancer research in dialogue with the treatment and recovery process of the artist, suffering from the same disease. The second component, Fishing for Food, consists of video and new media “portraits” of humans fishing for food in polluted waters in the United States. Current confirmed locations are Long Beach, CA (near the LA Harbor) and the East River in Brooklyn, NY. The third project, The Life Garden, is a garden and database compiling information about all plant-derived alternative cancer products that have proven evidence of assisting in the treatment of various cancers. The garden is meant to be comprehensive and only include plants that have been tested and studied in humans.
