"At the retreat I was able to connect with
artists and curators that I either wouldn't have met otherwise or would
have taken a decade to meet. The retreat atmosphere cut out the drag
of being in a hyper-competitive environment. All of the grantees had
a moment to share their work, and everyone had equal access to the consultants.
The atmosphere created an environment for meaningful conversations about
the work and the way it functions."
- Liz Cohen, 2005 Grantee
" The retreat helped propel the project from a general plan
into a concrete reality."
- Pablo Helguera, 2005 Grantee
" I felt renewed when I left [the retreat]... I can't even begin
to tell you what Creative Capital means to me— I am a lucky one."
- Kay Miller, 2000 Grantee
" I had excellent meetings with the consultants, great talks
with people, a very informative workshop and a blissful swim in the
lake and of course I loved the presentations... thank you thank you
thank you thank you."
- Shelly Hirsch, 2002 Grantee
One of the key features of Creative Capital's Artist Services program
is the Artists Retreat. The retreat is held every year that new artists
are funded, and new and returning grantees, as well as arts professionals
from both the nonprofit and commercial sector, are invited to attend.
The retreats create opportunities for grantees in all disciplines (Visual
Arts, Film/Video, Emerging Fields, Performing Arts, and Innovative Literature)
to meet, present their work, brainstorm with colleagues and consultants,
and participate in formal workshops and seminars. One of the core goals
of Creative Capital is to foster a sense of community among artists,
between artists and arts professionals, and among arts professionals
in many disciplines. Through the retreats, the organization aims to
encourage professional relationships that will remain in place long
after the grant period ends.
