On Our Radar

About

Welcome to On Our Radar, a searchable database featuring more than 300 projects that advanced to the second or third round in last year's highly competitive Emerging Fields, Literature and Performing Arts grant round. Although these projects were not ultimately funded, we feel they are projects to watch, and we invite you to explore them. This site will be online until September 30, 2013.

The Center of the World

An experiment in futures research, scenario planning and architectural eutopia (the fortunate or blessed place): the project envisions Chicago's Circle Interchange as the center of the world. An exhibition and book will project visionary "histories of the future" posited in short urban fictions, maps, diagrams, photomontages, drawings, models and digital animations.

Baudelaire in a Box

The project will result in a multi-night performance of the entire contents of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal as cantastoria in 2017. Cantastoria is the performance of visual art with music, so each poem will be performed combining a scrolling image created by myself and an original musical adaptation by a musician.

Idiot - To Our Enemies

A staged performance that includes video of Dostoevsky's The Idiot with the author as protagonist. It unearths moments of inspiration for scenes from The Idiot, adopting a vampiric, Bernhardian confabulation of facts (á la Wittgenstein's Nephew) from Dostoevsky's biography, focusing on his near execution as a result of involvement in the Petrashevsky circle.

MetaKinetic

MetaKinetic uses dance, light and sound to embody purposeful self-destruction. Inspired by Jean Tinguely's metamechanics and choreographed by Catherine Cabeen, this performance embraces the importance of iconoclasm in personal and cultural revolutions. The third piece in a trilogy celebrating New Realism, MetaKinetic uses highly structured physical improvisations to transform formal movement compositions into joyful chaos.

The Revolutionaries Try Again

Antonio, Leopoldo and Rolando attempt to transform Ecuador during the decade accursed by the austerity packages of Leon Martin Cordero and the asinine populism of El Loco Bucaram. This novel is infused with formal constraints, altered state monologues, Messiaen's birds and the emdashed legacy of a dead liberation theology priest.
