On Our Radar

About

Welcome to On Our Radar, a searchable database featuring more than 300 projects that advanced to the second or third round in last year's highly competitive Emerging Fields, Literature and Performing Arts grant round. Although these projects were not ultimately funded, we feel they are projects to watch, and we invite you to explore them. This site will be online until September 30, 2013.

Fieldwork

We, the Vis-à-Vis Society, execute poetic-scientific fieldwork via multiple-choice poem-surveys and scientific method poetry, collecting and reporting data from research and live audiences using 3D live graphs, overhead projectors, statistical jug bands and dance steps. Our latest findings are being documented via videopoems and accompanying booklets.

Vis-à-Vis Society is a collaboration of Sierra Nelson and Rachel Kessler.

The Circuit

The Circuit upends the ten-act Vaudeville evening into an audience-engulfing variety show for outcasts of the Internet age. Developed by The Hinterlands' multi-disciplinary team, The Circuit scours the many voices of American subculture–riot grrrls, b-boys, juggalos and jitters–for clues into who we are in America's second millennium.

The Hinterlands is a collaboration of Richard Newman, Liza Bielby, Barney Baggett, Haleem Rasul, Jon Brumit and Torri Ashford.

Attended Baggage

Attended Baggage is a solo Suitcase Theater performance project investigating ideas about security, emergency, class and dislocation. Using puppetry, clown, storytelling and audience interaction, this project explores notions of trespass and travel. In doing so, it temporarily transforms train platforms, bus stations and baggage claim terminals into sites of performative inquiry and human exchange.

Enlightenment on E Floor North

Enlightenment on E Floor North will be a touring, ensemble-created play devised by Strange Attractor about museum security guards. Led by company member Jed Hancock-Brainerd, who worked as a museum guard, we are researching guards and developing the piece: a clown-inspired, sub-political, character-driven homage to invisible American workers.

Strange Attractor Theatre Co. is a collaboration of Rebecca Noon, Jed Hanock-Brainerd, Aram Aghazarian, Roblin Davis and Kamili Feelings.

The Framing Effect

The Framing Effect uses computerized LEDs to break mass media into its core aesthetic elements of color, light, motion and sound, and reconfigures them to drive hybrid installations that fuse video, sculpture and architecture. The work reframes popular communications in environments that are both seductive and confrontational.

Ludic Proxy

Using video games as a dramaturgy and organizing element, writer/director Aya Ogawa's Ludic Proxy is a multi-lingual, multi-media performance that explores how immersion in digital technologies can distort our identities, histories and memories. Stories from Fukushima, Chernobyl and Afghanistan weave in and out of each other within a dreamscape of projections, movement, and sound. The work premieres in the fall of 2014 and is produced by The Play Company.

A Short HIstory of Petrification

Medusa, of snake-hair and petryifying fame, is a mythological figure that represents the femme fatale. Yet her antecedent, the Gorgoneion, protected fertility from the evil eye. This book studies petrification (the process of turning into stone) through a re-reading of the myth and two associated phenomena: jellyfish or Medusae, and coral formations.

Lumarca

Lumarca is a 60-cubic-foot light sculpture that displays true 3D content. By creating an array of strings dispersed through depth, and placed so that they all receive an unobstructed ray of light from the projector, Lumarca will produce the appearance of 3D objects in motion viewable from all sides.

First Steps

First Steps takes the form of a lushly vegetated spiral staircase folly, perched adjacent to Socrates Sculpture Park's shoreline. Reaching down to the water's surface and up to a height of nine feet above ground, the structure encourages visitors to experience the park's unique post-industrial waterfront edge, while also functioning as an experiential open-loop bioremediation system.
