Performing Arts grantee David Roussève presents the New York premiere of his Creative Capital project Saudade at Danspace in NYC, Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25. Written, directed and choreographed by Roussève, the dance-theater work combines storytelling, video imagery and Portuguese Fado music with practitioners of Indonesian, Bharata Natyam and West African dance forms. Using African American history as a lens through which to explore a single moment of greatest joy and agony, Saudade embodies conversations on global cooperation and American isolationism.
“One day, some breakthrough string-theory of the heart is sure to explain why beauty and damnation can be perceived at the same moment. Until then, David Roussève’s dance-theater work Saudade … offers a succinct and lyrical look at how the highs and lows of life collide.” —The Washington Post
