The Visual Arts Round Table: Curators will consist of a live 90-minute conversation about curatorial practice between curator/art historian Rachel Nackman and visual artist/gallerist Matthew Deleget.  The interview will cover all aspects of the relationship between visual artists, writers, and curators, including identifying new artists, web sites and online portfolios, conducting studio visits, the process of criticism/curation, current trends in the art market, and more.  Participating artists will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the webinar.


To attend this webinar, you will need access to a computer with speakers and an Internet connection (hard-wired is preferred over wireless). There is no special software needed.

ABOUT RACHEL NACKMAN
Rachel Nackman is the curator for the contemporary drawings collector Wynn Kramarsky. She graduated from Tufts University in 2007, where she studied art history and English, writing her undergraduate honors thesis on the development and contemporary use of the object label in the art museum. She worked as a gallery coordinator at the Tufts University Art Gallery and was the founding president of the Tufts Art History Society. While in school, Rachel explored her interest in works on paper as a conservation assistant in the Paper Lab at the Straus Center at Harvard Art Museums.


In July 2007, Rachel joined the team at the Kramarsky Collection as registrar and began considering the many ways people think and write about art. As part of the catalogue for New York/New Drawings: 1946-2007, the collection’s 2009 exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente in Segovia, Spain, Rachel organized a collaborative writing project, through which artists in the collection were asked to comment on each other’s work. She organized and edited a similar project for the Kramarsky Collection’s show at the Katonah Museum of Art, which was released in January 2011 as an online exhibition catalogue (www.aboutdrawing.org/drawntapedburned). Since this first foray into the digital, Rachel has built and edited comprehensive online catalogues for Notations: Contemporary Drawing as Idea and Process (www.aboutdrawing.org/notations) at the Kemper Art Museum, Washington University in St. Louis, and for Art=Text=Art: Works by Contemporary Artists (www.artequalstext.com), which she co-curated under N. Elizabeth Schlatter for the University of Richmond Museums, Virginia. Art=Text=Art is currently on view at its third venue, the Hafnarborg in Hafnarfjör∂ur, Iceland, through late June 2013; in January 2014 it will travel to the Andersen Gallery, University at Buffalo.


In 2011, Rachel completed her MA in Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, with a qualifying paper on the drawings of Fred Sandback. She was the founding editor of the Contemporary Art Consortium blog (ifacontemporary.wordpress.com), an outlet for non-academic writing by members of the extended IFA community. Rachel is currently an Associate Art Editor for the Brooklyn Rail. She lives in Brooklyn, where she is an avid reader and runner.


The Kramarsky Collection’s main website (www.aboutdrawing.org), masterminded and launched in 2008 by Rachel’s colleague Michael Randazzo, collects images and detailed information regarding the large number of works on paper donated by Sally & Wynn Kramarsky to public institutions. About Drawing also chronicles the remarkable exhibition history of 560 Broadway, Wynn Kramarsky’s SoHo exhibition space from 1991 to 2006. 


ABOUT MATTHEW DELEGET
Matthew Deleget is an abstract painter, curator, and arts worker. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including solo and group exhibitions in the US, Europe, and Australasia. Matthew has received awards from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, Brooklyn Arts Council, and The Golden Rule Foundation, and his work has been reviewed in Artforum, The New York Times, Flash Art, Artnet Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Basler Zeitung, among others. He is a member of American Abstract Artists, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation’s Artist Advisory Committee, and the board of The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.


In 2003, Matthew founded MINUS SPACE, a platform for reductive art on the international level based in Brooklyn, NY. Since 2006, Matthew has organized more than 40 solo and group exhibitions at both MINUS SPACE’s gallery in Dumbo, Brooklyn, as well as other collaborating venues on the national and international levels. MINUS SPACE exhibitions have been reviewed in Art in America, Artcritical, Artnet Magazine, ArtNews, The Brooklyn Rail, Houston Public Radio, Huffington Post, The New Criterion, New York Magazine, NYFA Current, New York Sun, Time Out New York, Village Voice, and The Wall Street Journal, among others.


Matthew holds an MFA in Painting and an MS in Theory, Criticism and History of Art, Design and Architecture from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. He holds a BA in Art and German from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, IN. He lives with his wife, artist Rossana Martinez, and son in Brooklyn, NY.


ABOUT THE ONLINE LEARNING PROGRAM
We are proud to offer selected topics from PDP workshops to the general public through the  Online Learning Program. We are dedicated to extending our reach to artists who are new to Creative Capital’s professional development offerings, as well as those PDP alumni who are interested in a refresher course. Many of these courses are designed for individual artists of all disciplines, while others will be discipline-specific.


Most Online Learning sessions will be approximately 90 minutes in duration, including lecture and Q&A sessions. Webinars are taught and moderated live by talented workshop leaders, so the information is always up-to-date and engaging. Q&A sessions are included to be sure that all our participants have the chance to follow up on specific concerns.
